Bascule Highback Lounge Chair, Four-star Swivel Base

Description

The Bascule lounge chair takes its name from the French word for “seesaw”, a direct reference to the concealed Vitra mechanism at its core. Automatically adjusting to the user’s weight, the chair follows the body from upright sitting to a deeply reclined, almost horizontal position. Sit up to read, lean back to listen, or just settle in. The companion Ottoman or Bench extends support through the legs as Bascule moves into a deeper recline. The Bascule Bench can also be used independently as a comfortably upholstered occasional seat.

The broad movement informed Bascule's construction. A powder-coated tubular steel frame supports tensioned fabric and chamber cushioning, while the generously cut upholstery has enough freedom to move with the chair rather than resist it. With the Highback Lounge Chair, the neck cushion can be raised by 60mm for more individual support.

A four-star die-cast aluminium swivel base offers two lounge chair seat heights, while the alternative lacquered solid oak base provides a warmer, more grounded option at the lower height.

Bascule is designed with future care in mind. Its upholstery avoids adhesives, and components can be separated, repaired or exchanged. The removable cover can be professionally cleaned or replaced. Cushioning incorporates PET fibres made from 100% post-industrial waste alongside V-Foam, developed jointly by Vitra and BASF as an economically recyclable polyurethane foam.
